A
design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system
or for the implementation of an activity or process, or the result of that plan
or specification in the form of a prototype, product or process. The verb to
design expresses the process of developing a design.
The
traditional role of design has been to improve the visual appearance and
function of messages and information. The publishing industry relies on
designers for printed and online books, magazines, and newspapers that inform,
delight, and support the interests of readers. Designers distinguish businesses
from their competitors in the marketplace through innovative approaches to
branding, the comprehensive design of messages, products, and services that
express the character of a company and define its relationships with consumers.
Advertising design promotes the marketable qualities of commercial products and
services through a variety of communication media. And information designers
translate complicated numerical and textual explanations into visual forms that
help people see patterns in data and relationships among the components of
complicated ideas.
In all these practices, designers use typography,
photographs, illustrations, and graphic elements to construct messages that
attract attention, cause us to think about their meaning, and stay in our
memories over time.

| What is design |
When that question is asked, pretty much all the answers you get strive to define a very specific area of design. For instance, defining “graphic design” doesn’t really define “design”. It hints at it, but “furniture design”, “UX design”, “genetic design” will all have a different definition.
This is something I think about quite a bit, since (graphic) design school. We spent some good 6 months mulling over this very question, without hitting an answer. And I guess that was the whole point. Our mentors intended to generate discussion, not answers.

| What is design |
Design is defined as doing or a planning something with a particular purpose or aim in mind. On the other hand, the design is solving problem through different kind of iteration processes as well as forming certain valuable needs on its solution approach. On the one hand, the word design has many challengeable perceptional understandings through which it is dedicated to the context that it’s being used as a specific term. On a certain level the design is about giving forms to the artifacts that try to solve problems by using different processes and tools to achieve its goal.
